Robert Lynn
KSPQ - Back Alley Blues Show
Started the First Sunday in November 1995
First got into music around the age of 5 as my brothers were 10 and 12 years older so was into the Rock and R & B of the mid and late 60's with my favorite being The Beatles. Continued those taste into my teens but also liked the Allman Brothers Band, Eric Clapton, and Led Zeppelin. Little did I know what they were playing was Blues or Blues based. Even saw Muddy Waters open up for Eric Clapton and had no idea who Muddy was but knew he was good.
Growing up in West Plains the only good music I could get on the radio was WLS AM 89 out of Chicago. Listening to DJ's Larry Lujack and John Landecker made me want to follow in their footsteps and into radio. I went to the Columbia School of Broadcasting but then went into the Air Force. While serving in Northern California I was turned on to the Blues by a fellow Airman who had a big cd collection and also books on the subject. Being a history buff I delved into anything I could read on the artist and was also able to see such artist perform like Johnny Winter, Savoy Brown, Roy Rogers, Little Charlie & Nightcats, Elvin Bishop, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
On my shows 10th Anniversary I got the station to put on a Blues concert for me with Jimbo Mathus, Duwayne Burnside, and Bert Smith. It was such a success that it has turned out to be an annual event with last year having T-Model Ford, Lightnin' Malcolm, and Gerry Moss. And last St. Patty's Day Mem Shannon and Moreland & Arbuckle played in West Plains. The Ozarks is starved for good Blues shows and most of the feedback I get leans toward liking the original artist who don't try to copy someone else's sound.
One of the more interesting interviews is one that didn't happen on the air, John Mayall didn't call me at the station as he had forgot but later in the day he called my house. With his past history of turning out greats like Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor it was almost surreal the conversation we were having.
It took Rock and Blues Rock to steer me toward the Blues but it is the artist who are doing there own original style that keeps me hooked. A lot of those artist are still performing nightly in the Arkansas and Mississippi Delta and I highly recommend a trip to Helena Arkansas or Clarksdale Mississippi to hear the Real Deal stuff. Also a great party is in late August at the annual Otha Turner Family Picnic near Senatobia. Go once and you'll be hooked for life.
