The West Plains Habitat for Humanity Re-Store is open Wednesday, Thursday, and Fridays from eight to five and Saturdays from nine to one.  It’s on Porter Wagoner Blvd. in West Plains. They sell used building materials and take donations of the same. Call 417-256-1576.
 
The Willow Springs YMCA offers an exercise class for senior adults ages 60 and over. This class is on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 8 to 9 p.m. The YMCA is located at 405 West Main Street.

The Ozark Independent Living will be visiting Eminence the 4th of each month in the Eminence Senior Citizens Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free informational services are provided for the disabled and elderly such as assistive devices, legislative efforts, peer support, advocacy, TAP, TAP Internet, and information and referrals. Independent In-Home services include basic personal care, nurse visits, advanced personal care, respite, and homemaker chores. There is also Consumer Directed Services for your home. Families in need of assistance for the holidays should fill out an application form at the Chamber of Commerce office, 401 Jefferson Avenue. 62 non-profit agencies make up an alliance that will coordinate donations. Individual donors are also asked to contact the chamber at 256-4433 for details.
 
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is having its 3rd through 6th grade basketball league again this year. The games will start December 6th and run through February. Games will be on Saturdays and the cost to each team will be $150.00. Each team is guaranteed 2 games per day. League tournament will be conducted at the end of the season. Once again, U.S. Cellular is Calling All Communities to Believe in Something Better for our Children’s Future and to be apart of something bigger! From now thru January 15th, individuals will have the opportunity to visit any U.S. Cellular location and vote for their favorite private or public school to become one of ten recipients of a $100,000 donation from U.S. Cellular. That’s a grand total of $1 Million to our communities. How you can participate: Anyone that comes into a U.S. Cellular store and speaks with a sales associate can receive a postage paid postcard to cast their vote for a school of their choice and place it in the running for a $100,000 donation. Any public or private school serving K-12 in the United States is eligible. The 10 schools that receive the most votes will receive $100,000 from U.S. Cellular. From now to January 20th, the West Plains Artist Guild will host a Christmas Art Exhibit at the West Plains Senior Center. All are welcome to view the exhibit during regular center hours.

Missouri State University-WP will host an early registration period Monday, January 5th, 2009 for classes being offered during the 2009 spring semester at the MSU-WP campus in Houston. Registration for current and readmitted students will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. that day at the Houston Campus facility in the Houston Plaza located at 1591 N. HWY 63. On Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. there will be a benefit auction for Tanner at Junction Hill School. Enjoy a spaghetti dinner along with a gospel band for entertainment. There will also be an auction to auction off pies and gift certificates donated by local businesses. On January 15, the West Plains Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet will be held at the West Plains Opera House beginning at 6 p.m. Nominations are being accepted now from the general public for the Citizen of the Year award, Customer Service Award, Educator of the Year, Civic/Nonprofit Organization of the Year, Philanthropist of the Year, Chamber Business of the Year, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. Music in the Mountains returns to the Horseshoe Bend Theatre with their annual “Superbowl Show”, Saturday, January 17, and is encouraging everyone to come out for an evening of entertainment. Everyone is encouraged to adorn attire of their favorite teams whether it is NFL, college or high school football, baseball, or basketball attire. There will be a silent auction and bake sale in the lobby of the Theatre for this event. Among the auction items, Melodie Clemmons, Founder and Host of the Horseshoe Bend Theatre “Music in the Mountains Show” is proud to announce Horseshoe Bend resident and Certified Executive Chef, David Kugler along with his wife Cheryl are going to host an auction dinner to benefit the Horseshoe Bend Theatre and Music in the Mountains.  The gala dinner will be a four coarse event to be held in the winning bidders' home at an agreed upon date.  Don't miss out on the opportunity to have this award winning chef, cook for you and your closest friends.  Sorry but we have to limit the number of participants to 8.  Opening bid $200.00  Bids can be submitted to 870-373-3303 or you can bid at the January 17 show at the theatre.  Bidding will absolutely end February 10th and the winner will be announced at the February 14th show.  The menu choices can be viewed on the MITM website www.myspace.com/musicinthemountainshsb  or by calling (870) 373-3303.  All proceeds will go to the Horseshoe Bend Theatre. Relay For Life of Howell County to kick-off it’s 15th Annual Event Howell County residents are invited to Kick-Off Open House for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Howell County as the planning and team organization begins for the 15th Annual Event. The kick-off open house will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009 at Howell Oregon Electric Cooperative and is open to anyone who wants to learn more about the Relay For Life and how to get involved. Relay For Life is a community event that honors cancer survivors, current cancer patients and caregivers. Relay also pays tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer. “If you think you might want to join a team or form a new one with friends, co-workers or relatives, come to this event and learn how. Anyone is welcome,” he added. The Relay For Life of Howell County is scheduled for June 5 and 6 at West Plains Zizzer Stadium with a Theme of “Cancer – Just Beat It.” As always, there promises to be lots of teams, food and fun on-site the night of the event and everyone is encouraged to come out and participate. “You don’t have to be on a team to participate in the Relay event. If you’ve never been to the event, I encourage everyone to come see this emotional event and show your support for the fight against cancer,” Gibson concluded. This year’s goals include 46 teams working together to raise $135,000. Team captains will have meetings monthly with a special education opportunity in February called Team Captain’s University.
